Downtown Living vs Beach Access
After a while, the smell of meat, liquor and weed loses a bit of it’s novelty
There’s nothing like downtown living. If you live above the 5th floor of an apartment building downtown, there’s a good chance, you can see the entire town from your balcony.
There’s a certain beauty to being able to look outside and decide which streets you’d like to cycle to your destination. Everything is right there. The grocery store. The liquor store. The weed spot.
You might be thinking to yourself … well, that’s pretty dangerous. For those that lack discipline, that can be catastrophic. Yeah, you’d be right; however, for those that tend toward self-correction, this is actually a plus. For example, I’m the type of person that can eat food that is terrible for me, and that’s a good thing. Why? Because, I listen to my body. So, the best thing for me is to do the exact things I shouldn’t do; because, eventually, as long as I don’t die from the activity, I’m going to self-correct; and once I do, I generally do not go back to the bad behavior.
This is why downtown living has been great for me. Living in this town for almost a year, I’ve done it all. I’ll spare you the details, but, let’s just say, if you can think of it, I’ve probably tried it here … and now, I’m done.
I’ve come to realize that serenity for me is living in the following location:
- Nearby bike trails
- At least one top tier beach within 5 miles
- A low-cost grocery store within 1 mile (i.e. Walmart)
- Easy access to public transportation (i.e. Bus and/or Train)
- Nearby Museums, Live Music, Rooftop Restaurants/Bars, and Water Parks
- Quick access to Kayak, SUP, and boat rentals
- Year-round relatively warm weather
- Lots of beautiful women
It’s a short list; however, it’s interesting to note how few locations provide all of the above.
As a fairly cost conscious software engineer who is daily leveling up his understanding of personal finance, a location like this is essentially paradise. The closest thing to heaven on earth.
You can’t run out of fun things to do here. Living downtown has provided some interesting insights into what my most ideal living situation looks like. When a top 10 beach is a 15 minute bike ride away, how can you not thrive in that environment?
